5 OCTOBER 2007 - THE RUN UP TO THE 2008 SATS TESTS BEGINS!

The run up to the 2008 SATS exams starts in earnest with the new term. After the initial honeymoon period (children going back to school, new uniform, settling in, etc.), it's about now that parents really start thinking about how they can assist their children for the SATS in May.

The first thing to understand is what tests they will be taking next year.

For Key Stage 2, this will be

Two written Maths papers (worth 40% each)
One mental maths test (worth 20%)
Two written science papers (worth 50% each)
English Reading (50%) and English Writing (50%)

The mental maths paper is really one of the papers that many do not tend to focus on, but this is where parents can really help their child with mental maths strategies to help them conduct calculations in their head.

The Harris mental maths paper is good for this : Mental Maths

This paper is very similar to the actual mental maths test given to children at Key Stage 2 - you will see the type, style and difficulty of questions that children in Year 6 are expected to do. By practicing this paper, and asking your children similar questions when you are in the car, out for a walk, or perhaps in a more controlled environment, you will be able to help your child develop mental strategies which will serve them in good stead when the actual mental maths exam takes place in May 2008.

Remember, in the real exam (similar to the Harris Test), children will sit with the answer sheet, and the teacher will play the audio. Each question is repeated twice, and the child has 5, 10, or 15 seconds to answer the questions depending upon the difficulty
